Reform of the teacher education programme

Due to a change in legislation, new curricula will apply from 1 October 2026 onwards. Here, you can find information about the next steps in the process.

We aim at maintaining and further improving the high quality of the teacher education programme despite the statutory shorter duration of the programme.

  • Why is the programme reformed?

The Austrian National Council has decided that the teacher education programme for the secondary school will be changed to a three-year bachelor’s and a two-year master's programme on 1 October 2026. Therefore, the curricula need to be redesigned.

  • What does this mean for your studies?

From the winter semester of 2026/2027 onwards, you will have the opportunity to change to the new shorter degree programme. The University of Vienna will support you when changing and will take care that your achievements as part of the current curriculum are recognised in the new programme. You will benefit from the shorter degree programme duration and will be informed about your options by e-mail before the start of the new degree programme.

  • What is happening next?

In the following months, competence profiles for the individual teaching subjects and subject didactics are developed. The guiding question in the process is: What should graduates of the teacher education programme know and be able to do? This discussion is about to begin in the teaching subjects with broad participation.

  • How can you contribute?

Also you, as student, have the opportunity to actively contribute to the process. You can share your perspectives and help shape the new teacher education programme as part of the curricular working groups. Your opinions and ideas should already be considered in the competence profile concepts.
