Students of the bachelor’s programme in Japanology gain an understanding of modern Japan from a perspective of cultural studies and social sciences, based on Japanese language and scripts, as well as relevant historical foundations. Graduates have the following qualifications: language proficiency in written and spoken Japanese, intercultural competences related to Japan, ability to work with Japanese source materials, basic knowledge of Japan, history, society, culture, politics and economy.

Please note that the instruction language of this programme is German. To start the degree programme, you need to hold a certificate of German proficiency on C1 level.

Study programme

The bachelor’s programme in Japanology consists of an Introductory and Orientation Period (STEOP) and compulsory modules (Japanese in theory and practice; regional and cultural studies; basic knowledge of Japanese culture and society; politics and economy; intercultural learning and academic research and writing), as well as an internship. To successfully complete the programme, students have to write two bachelor’s theses. A study visit to Japan for one or two semesters is a valuable addition to the degree programme and is usually supported by the Department as far as possible.
