Master programme in Sinophone Societies and Cultures
Your steps in the admission procedure depend on whether you have completed your previous degree programme at the University of Vienna or another post-secondary educational institution.
Degree programme instructed in English
The language of instruction in this degree programme is English. A proof of German language proficiency is not required.
Additional requirements
English language proficiency at level B2
To be admitted to an English or multilingual master programme at the University of Vienna, you have to provide a proof of English language proficiency.
To apply for admission to this degree programme, you require a proof of English language proficiency at level B2.
Further language requirements
To apply for admission to this degree programme, you need knowledge of modern Chinese at level B2, verified by HSK 5 or TOCFL Band B Level 4.
Qualitative admission requirements (QZB)
The entry requirements for the master programme are based on the three key competencies outlined in § 3 art. 5, subsections (a), (b) and (c) of the curriculum (English version of the curriculum, docx.). Please note: legally binding is only the German version of the curriculum (PDF). They relate to
- (a) scholarly research skills (in social science or cultural studies) focused on at least one Sinophone society or culture to an extent of at least 14 ECTS and
- (b) scholarly research skills (in social science or cultural studies) with an optional focus on a Sinophone society or culture to an extent of at least 16 ECTS
- (c) basic knowledge about at least one Sinophone society or culture to an extent of at least 16 ECTS and
- (d) Knowledge of modern Chinese at level B2 (Common European Framework). For the kind of accepted prove of language proficiency, the regulations of the University of Vienna apply.
- (e) Submission of a self-written letter of motivation in English. Please use the form provided here (PDF)
Prospective students who have completed the bachelor programme in Sinology at the University of Vienna already fulfill the QZB. Below you will find detailed instructions for on how courses may satisfy requirement (a) and both requirement (b) and (c) at the same time.

Section (a): scholarly research skills (in social science or cultural studies) focused on at least one Sinophone society or culture
To fulfil the required 14 ECTS for section (5) (a), you may propose courses equivalent to those offered in Modules M5, M6 and M7 in the bachelor programme in Sinology at the University of Vienna (only available in German). The proposed courses must fulfil the following three requirements:
- explicit focus on at least one Sinophone society or culture
- provide methodological and/or theoretical training in social sciences OR cultural studies
- match the content, weekly course load and assessment methods used in Modules M5, M6, and M7 of the bachelor programme in Sinology at the University of Vienna.

Section (b) scholarly research skills (in social science or cultural studies) with an optional focus on a Sinophone society or culture
To fulfil the required 16 ECTS for section (5) (b), you may propose courses that provide methodological and/or theoretical training in social sciences OR cultural studies. You may also propose additional courses with an explicit focus on at least one Sinophone society or culture, provided these courses have not already been used to meet the 14 ECTS requirement for section (5) (a) and provide methodological and/or theoretical training.

Section (c) basic knowledge about at least one Sinophone society or culture.
To fulfil the required 16 ECTS for section (5) (c), you may propose courses that provide basic knowledge (historical, societal, political, cultural etc.) on at least one Sinophone society or culture.
These courses must be equivalent to those offered in Modules M02, M03 and M04 in the bachelor programme in Sinology at the University of Vienna (PDF, only available in German). For present and past course descriptions, please consult the course directory.
Alternatively, you can use the same courses proposed to fulfil the requirements for section (5) (b), provided they explicitly focus on at least one Sinophone society or culture.
Description of qualifications
To be admitted to the master programme in Sinophone Societies and Cultures, you need previous knowledge relevant to the field.
If you can not prove your previous knowledge by completing the bachelor programme in Sinology at the University of Vienna, you have to provide a description of qualifications (form, docx). This is a depiction of achievements that correspond to the required qualifications, which you obtained before your application for admission. Save the form, fill it in and attach it when applying for admission in u:space at "Further documents and proofs" as document type "Description of qualifications".
